Avila Beaches

Just twenty steps until you reach the water, straight from our Inn, you arrive on our own Beach. Called just Avila by the locals, Avila is really three beaches. First, the main beach, Avila Beach, is divided by the pier. If you take the stairs down in front of the Inn, and take a left, at low tide you can walk all the way to Fossil Point. This serves as a glimpse of the first of many sea caves. But be careful as the tides can change quickly. This spot is perfect for private sunbathing, rock sitting, or looking at it's tide pools. The right side of the pier, facing the ocean, is intended for families and young children. This part of the beach includes a children's park equipped with a pirate ship playground, basketball courts and barbecue pits. During low tides children and adults can explore the tide pools underneath the bridge as well as an estuary full of wildlife. Closer to the pier, there are children's swings and public barbecues, both on the beach. On the left side of the pier you will notice families, the college aged visitors, and couples as well. Umbrellas, beach towels, and tents cover the beach during the summer months. But no need to bring yours; the Inn has loaner chairs, boogie boards, and sand toys for the kids.

If you travel further down San Luis Bay Drive, you will run into Hartford Beach. Often called "the Dog Beach" by locals, your four legged friends are welcome at all hours of the day to run free. Here you will see beautiful views of the Port of San Luis Obispo, and the local fisherman bringing in their catch. At the far end of the beach are eight fire pits for public use at no charge. But these are on a first com, first serve basis, so if you're planning on hosting a typical summer bonfire, get there early to reserve your spot.

The last beach, which is perhaps the most controversial, is Pirates Cove. This clothing-optional beach is a private secluded beach, with some incredible views of the Coast. Visitors should take caution, as in order to get to this exclusive beach, you must go down a steep and windy foot path. To get to this secluded beach, take Cave Landing Road from Avila Beach Drive, and follow the road to the top. There you will find a steep foot path to the left, and follow that down to the beach.
